It can't be option B?
Because past perfect tense is only used when we are talking about two past actions (no other case used).
Eg: When I reached the station, the train had already left.
Past perfect tense tells which action is done first in the two past actions.

Option A is right because in the sentence we are giving the past time, so they must be past indefinite.
