Yesterday's performance is not right in my opinion. It should be "His performance was not good by yesterday".

The possesive form is valid for living being.
In the case of a nonliving item, the structure is as follows "The performance of yesterday".
So from my understanding, the answer should "the performance of yesterday was".But it is not in the option.

I can give one better example to understand where we use yesterday, yesterday's.
1. Did you get my message yesterday?
2. My message today is different from yesterday's.
In single situation we don't use yesterday's always use yesterday.

I think it would have been "performance of yesterday" which is not in the given option. So E is correct.
