I beleive that option E is absolutely right answer because as here " they" refers to crowd which is perfect. So no correction required.

In the sentence "if he was right", so the should either be "he was" or "he wasn't". And I think I don't have to mention why not optn. C or b. So the ans is e.

@Priya I think the way you took in answering the above sentence in that sense "C" should be correct.

This is really a nice question. Here we can have two answers at a time. They are:
1)They can tell whether they thought about the matter
OR,
2)They can tell their answer whether he is correct or not.
If we see the options, the second answer is present in option A and C. But we don't choose them as they are grammatically incorrect.
First answer can be matched with option B and E. Option B is not correct as question is in simple past so the answer can't be in past perfect.And we are left with the only option i.e E. So, E is the correct one.

Option A is right because in question they are talking about "he was right" so in answer it should come that "that he did".
