The Answer is wrong here. Here he asked the crowd whether he was right or wrong and the crowd shouted wether he did right or wrong. Here right or wrong does was "He" not the crowd. "That they did" here they pronoun of "The crowd".

May be the sentence is in passive voice so E is correct answer.

That he did is wrong because the sentence is in passive voice.

Yes, OPTION E seems to be appropriate as THAT THEY DID means that they are actually supporting whatever he says.

According to my view, since the statement is an indirect speech, I think the answer is he was.

Here "they did" is undoubtedly correct because it clearly indicates "the crowd thought".

E is absolutely right.

Because a question is asked (if they thought he was right).

So (they replied, "yes we thought").

And indirect speech (they replied that they thought) or as we change narrations.

So 'they' in place of we.

And 'did' in place of thought.

We thought-indirect speech-they did.

Very simple:

This a simple past, the crowd = they.

They did, It is yes /No types such questions define as: Did you go there in time?

Reply may be : I did or I didn't. When you show intention.
