Read carefully their is only definition in the passage i.e. S1 so it gets compulsory to open the sentence with R.

Hence D is the answer.

According to me it's D.

Because first of all (R) shows the previous state of the invention of the machine. Then it comes (Q) where the question is asked "Is man a machine?". It's answer is there in (P). And at last in (S) shows another view of philosopher.

I thing the answer is wrong. "People asked 'Is a man machine?'" (Q) and then "And before the days of machinery that was a good definition".

(R) ---- Does this make sense? In my opinion, the correct answer should be D.
