We know that anybody can sing a song; be it good or bad. This idiom alludes to the pennies given to street singers or to the small cost of sheet music.
So 'for a song' means as if the buyer had only to sing a song and to get the desired item.
Ex- Land in the territory could be bought for a song in earlier days which are very costly now.

To sell something for a song means to sell at a very low price. As if all the buyer had to do was sing for it.

Whenever we see a word song in a statement. We can say that it is indicating very small sum.

Song is also having the meaning as "a very small sum".
