Hi,.
If something ends in smoke, it produces no concrete or positive result. This expression refers to the boasting by a person, of having put in a lot of efforts by him, for a particular cause or to attain a result which is very difficult to be done by any person. (This mainly refers to an investigation of a crime or solving a serious offence or a mystery). But at the end, when the desired result is not obtained, his claims are found to be false and not worth mentioning. So, he looses his credibility.

To ruin oneself is right.
When a building is on fire, it burns itself emitting lot of smoke and is completely destroyed at the end. Leaving only ash. Likewise To end in smoke means to ruin oneself.

Hi friends!
In my opinion, smoke comes after burning something. After burning nothing remains but a great devastation thus it might be "to end in ruin".

To end in smoke means at the end it came to nothing, loss of energy. For eg:- At the end all the hard work he did for the exam came to an end.

It means "produce no result". How can "ruin oneself" be the right answer? The correct answer should be "E" (ie) None of these.
