A member of the combined forces of central Asian peoples, including Mongols and Turks, who under the leadership of Genghis Khan conquered much of Asia and eastern Europe in the early 13th century, and under Tamerlane (14th century) established an empire with its capital at Samarkand.

So they were very dangerous men.

To catch a tartar has nothing to do with teeth or tartaric acid so please stop googling meaning of tartar but look complete phrase.

To catch a tartar meaning to fight with a strong army.

Usage: while fighting with Indian army enemy realised they had caught a tartar.

Hence I believe the answer should be "D".

To deal with a person who is more than one's match means.

This phrase means to catch a dangerous person. Tartar is something that get accumulated on our teeth [due to the food between our teeth] and causes tooth decay. We can also relate this to an angry person or tartaric acid.

We heard tarteric acid. Which is something salty in nature. Here tartar might be same way used with nature of person" like unpleasant or highly tempered person. So I feel option b is correct.

Correct if I may be wrong.
