Here the author mentioned that 'male lion's protected their cubs particularly from hyenas'. It means the cubs can be hunt by other animals but more from hyenas.

Look at the use of the word 'particularly'. It implies that other than hyenas, he's also talking about other animals.

Its says more from hyenas than from other animals so that means it meanly protects them from hyenas.
