Serious is a word which shows an important matter but seriously is a word which shows persons character at some point of time or his behaviour so if it would be seriously it would have been the answer but since there is an option causes it means that the lioness work courses about their prey and also they were seriously looking for their prey and not serious.

In comprehension author wrote that lioness are busy in hunting, I think when a person is busy then his cautious level become decreases.

Serious is something related to fear in her mind but cautious is related to responsible as lioness go with her family.

See the line (But slothfulness may have survival value). It indicates their must be care, protection, cautious by they have survival value.

Aren't 'cautious' and 'serious' pretty much the same in this sense? I mean a serious hunter would certainly be cautious and vice verse.

I think the answer is correct as the "Tensely scanning ahead" line stands for cautiousness.
