In the second last line "With lionesses busy hunting, the males function as a guard for the cubs, protecting them particularly from hyenas", it clearly describes that lions save their power in other things (guarding), rather than hunting which lioness can do.

Reticent means one who speaks less as it is already stated in the passage "bored".
