But I did not want to shoot the elephant. I watched him beating his bunch of grass against his knees, with the preoccupied grandmotherly air that elephants have. It seemed to me that it would be murder to shoot him. I had never shot an elephant and never wanted to. (Somehow it always seems worse to kill large animal.) Besides, there was the beast's owner to be considered. But I had got to act quickly. I turned to some experienced-looking Burmans who had been there when we arrived, and asked them how the elephants had been behaving. They all said the same thing; he took no notice of you if you left him alone, but he might charge if you went too close to him.

If you take keen notice of grandmothers, they are always busy doing something and while doing it they tend to either sing, hum or do some kind of gesture but the do it with dignity.

Elephants are generally calm and dignified creating an affectionate atmosphere around it, unlike Lions or tigers which create "preoccupied Indian mom" air around them scaring people off :P. Also author came there to kill it because this elephant has been considered as a beast, but could not while watching it play with grass. Although he had to act quickly he makes an inquiry with Burmans to make sure if the elephant is of any harm.

I think that in comprehension pre occupied grandmotherly before this the line is beating his bunch of grass against his knees, so in my point of view elephant shows his attitude in it. I think C option is the correct answer.
