The full sentence talks about learning, which is clear in the later part of the sentence "does not learn". So it will be learning.

Answer is learning.

When a child endeavours (tries) to learn he is putting efforts and is bit cautious of his language, tries to correct mistakes by himself. But when he is learning he is least bothered as he is learning what is correct.
