Commanly used forms are involute and cycloid but out of this two involute consists of single curve and allows for some adjustment and also easier to form than cycloid.

Because of the profile shape it is easy to manufacture a gear with involute profile.

This is the profile form of tooth, it is basically plane curve which is trace by point on circle without slipping & taut string wrapped on the circle it self which is known as base circle.
