TATA Consultancy Services Interview Experience - Kolkata, December 16, 2015
As you all know, TCS placement procedure consist of 2 phases:
1. Aptitude Test.
2. Interview (TR+MR+HR).
My aptitude test date was 2nd December, 2015. I couldn't get selected in the on-campus drive in our college during October, 2014 and also in the off-campus drive held in February, 2015. As a result I was a bit tensed and nervous as I knew that I have to clear it anyhow.
Guys, for aptitude part, please do follow Campus Gate. It contains each and every type of questions asked in TCS aptitude part and the solutions of those problems are explained in a beautiful manner. Even I got 6-7 questions common from Campus Gate. On 7th December, I got my aptitude test result and yippieee I cleared it. After that I started my interview preparations.
I would like to inform that I am a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering and my technical knowledge (electronics knowledge) is not so strong. But I have a liking and urge for programming since class 8 as I am from an English medium school.
Tips for Interview:
1. Please maintain a smooth formal dress. The colour of the shirt must not be too loud.
2. Your clothes should be well ironed and maintain well-polished shoes.
3. In each round of your interview do not forget to wish the members and a polite handshake will add an extra essence to your attitude.
4. Please maintain a clear voice with your interviewers.
5. Please do have a basic idea of the subjects which you are going to mention in your CV. Do not mention more than 3 subjects in your CV. And a clear knowledge on C programming (just the basic programmings) is very much necessary.
I had both my Technical and Managerial Rounds together. It started from 12:10 pm and it continued until 12:50 pm. There were 2 interviewers (one from Technical and the other was from Managerial department) in my panel and they were more friendly than I thought. I was asked some basic questions from 8085 microprocessor and communication:
1. Tell me the register sets of 8085.
2. Basic difference between 8085 and 8086.
3. We are having a circuit that displays an output and the output disappears immediately. Is it possible, Sir? If so, then suggest me a solution to this problem.
Last question answer: I said, Yes sir it is possible and suggested a delay circuit implementation. After that one of them asked to write a delay program. I said I don't know the exact programming but I can explain the algorithm.
He said, "No problem sir. I know you can explain the algorithm." Please don't try to bluff your interviewers if you do not know an answer. They will definitely catch you red-handed. If you don't know, simply say "I don't know Sir." After that they asked what my favourite programming language is and I said, "Sir, C." Please do prepare a valid reason against your favourite programming language.
The Technical faculty gave me a program to shift an array of 6 variables towards right. The program was very much easy but I made a terrible mistake in the loop section. I wrote a[i]=a[i+1] but it will be a[i+1]=a[i]. I saw it and the moment he was going to say I confessed my mistake. He said "No problem, rectify it." I was going to rectify it but suddenly the other person told "No need to correct it. You know your mistake and that is enough.
Please write the output in this case." Please be prepared for such type of counter questions. Anyway, I was able to show him the output and it seemed that both of them were very pleased. They then asked me to leave and wait. I wished them with a smile and a handshake and left the room.
After 5 minutes I was called for the HR round. My confidence level grew more and I knew that I am not going to get disappointed. Some of my friends had to go through another Technical round but I had only two rounds.
Greetings in the HR is very much important. Maintain a nice smile and do not forget to shake hand with your HR. If he doesn't offer one, you go for it.
Me: Good afternoon, Sir (with a smile and handshake).
HR: Good afternoon. Please take your seat.
Me: Thank you, Sir.
HR: Have you got any education gap or backlog?
Me: No sir.
HR: Are you telling the truth? Because we will be having your background checking.
Me: Yes sir. No problem.
HR: Ok, fine. Do you have any problem with relocation?
Me: No sir.
HR: If you are posted in Syria then will you go?
Me: Yes sir, I will go.
HR: Why? Your parents may become a hurdle in this case.
Me: No sir, they will not because my father is also in TATA and he knows if TCS gives me a posting in Syria then TCS will be there right beside me.
HR: And what about your mother?
Me: I don't have my mom. She died when I was in class 1.
HR: I am really sorry for your loss.
Me: No sir, it's all right.
HR: Then with whom do you live?
HR: Do you know anything about Syria?
Me: Yes sir. Answered.
HR: Ok. Tell me your hobbies.
Me: I like listening to music and I do play keyboard.
HR: What type of music?
Me: Present genres and Rabindra sangeet.
HR: How many years will you work for us?
Me: Until my retirement, Sir.
HR: Are you sure? Because if you violate TCS agreement then the penalty will be huge.
Me: Yes Sir.
HR: Have you given any other interviews till now or this is the first time?
Me: This is the first time.
HR: Why so?
Me: Sir, I was determined to be here where I am now: sitting before you.
HR: Ok. You may leave for the day. Your results will be communicated to you through your registered email id.
Me: Thank you Sir. It was really nice meeting you. Have a nice day, Sir (with a handshake).
For the HR round, prepare some of the common questions like: Tell me something about yourself, Why do you want to join TCS, Why should we hire you, etc.
Very important note: Please do have a clear idea about TCS, its CEO, its aims and goals, its revenue and capitalisation, its position in the world, etc. You may have to face such type of questions. Do not drag your answers unnecessarily. Try to give specific answers and try to provide relevant examples to support your answers.
On 24 December, 2015 results were declared in the afternoon through the mail and I was really on cloud nine. I got selected. My offer letter was sent to me through my mail.
So guys, remember: The selection chance depends completely on your technical performance. If your technical goes good, you are almost selected. The HR round is only for testing your communication skills, your confidence level and your positive attitude.
