TCS Interview Experience - Kolkata, March 24th 2014

Posted By : Deblina Dutta Chowdhury Rating : +102, -4
Hey TCS aspirants!

I am a student of EIE, Future Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata. I attended d TCS off campus drive at Kolkata and I'm gonna share my interview experience with you all. I was not selected finally, but I hope my experience helps you in preparing for TCS.

I had my online apti test on March 8th at Budge Budge Institute of Technology. Nearly 3000 odd candidates appeared fr d test which was held at multiple locations. The test comprised of 2 modules-first there was mail writing round. It was fairly simple. Phrases were given. Time was 10 mins. You have to really think and write fast otherwise you won't be able to complete it. Remember to use all d phrases. That is the key. Also avoid spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

The topic was about seeking permission from your project team leader to allow you to give paper presentation at a seminar abroad-something like that. Sry I can't remember d phrases. The next section was apti (there was -ve marking). There were 32 qns-30 qns were moderately hard/hard. D last 2 were very very hard. 1 piece of advice. Don't try to attempt those 2 qns unless you're very sure since these 2 carry more marks n hence more -ve marking. I only attempted 12 since I was fully confident about it. Don't take the risk of answering more when you are not sure. In my case all 12 were correct. Some people answered many more like 15/16/17 but they didn't get qualified since they had done -ve marking. My advice would be don't at all try to go for -ve marking. Apti test results came within 2 days. Practice at least level 1 of Arun Sharma for TCS apti. R. S Agarwal or previous papers are of no help.

Next was interview. I had mine on 24th March at Techno India, Salt Lake. Around 1000 people had attended the interview which was held in 4 phases at Kolkata starting from the 23rd. I reached the venue about 45 mins before the reporting time 2:00 pm. First they verified the application from and took it along with our hall ticket for apti test and also our resume. I got my interview call at around 3:00 pm. Since, my interview was on the last phase and they were running short of time and they had many candidates to interview, it was a TR+MR+HR. Some ppl had TR+MR and HR separately however.

Now coming to the interview:

I entered. 2 interviewers were there (I would refer them as I1 n I2).

Me (to I1) : Good afternoon Sir.

I1: Good afternoon.

Me (to I2) : Good afternoon Sir.

I2: Good afternoon.

I1: Please be seated.

I1: So, Deblina, tell me something about yourself.

Me: Blah blah blah (told: My name, place, family, education, strengths, weakness, hobbies, career obj and finally about project. D project part was intentional, as I wanted the next qn from our final year project).

I1: So tell me something about your project.

Me: Blah blah blah (I asked for a paper and started to explain with a block diag, ours is a totally digital based project).

Soon they lost interest however!

I1: What's it's use?

Me: Told.

I1: You claimed yourself to be a "problem solver" when you talked about your strengths. Please give an instance.

Me: Told with an real life E.G.

Next they asked from my resume.

I1: Why TCS?

Me: Good platform + growth opportunities + I love coding.

I1: Write the code for heapsort.

I wasn't prepared for it. I explained the logic instead. He gave me an E.G. I tried my best to explain it but they didn't look much convinced.

I1: What's AVL tree?

Me: Explained. But again they didn't look convinced.

I1: What is it's use.

Me: Sir I know d use of tree (started to explain but they interrupted).

I2: Do you know DBMS.

Me: No Sir, I don't.

(here again I made a mistake. It wasn't a part of my curriculum and I should have said that only. He probably assumed that I knew it but I don't remember).

I2: How much is the memory of 8051.

Me: Blah blah.

I2: Of 8051 microprocessor.

Me: No sir, its 8051 microcontroller.

Sir, 8085/86 are microprocessors and 8051 is a microcontroller.

I2: Microprocessor.

I stopped arguing. It was my ill-luck. The guy didn't know it.

I2: What do we use to msr heat?

Me: Sir, we have read about sensors to msr temp, not heat. They are.

I2: Why do we use load cell?

Me: To msr force.

I1: What are diff types of errors in Java.

Me: Error and exception.

I1: What are exceptions?

Me: Told.

I1: Can exceptions b detected during compilation?

Me: Told.

I1: What is encapsulation?

What is "this" (keyword) ?do we use it in C?

Me: Told.

I1: WAP in C to find the remainder of 2 no.s and a 3rd variable to it.

Me: Wrote and explained.

I2: Tell me the solution to this prog (a tough one using concept of pointers. I failed to give the correct answer).

I1: What are topics in C that you are good it.

Me: Told.

I1: You said you love coding, then why are you unable to answer all?

I was really embarrassed. I realized that I shouldn't have said it.

I2: What is CRC? what's it's use?

Me: It's full form is cyclic redundancy check. About it's use I don't remember much.

I2: What command do we write to check IP address?

Me: "ipconfig" in command prompt.

I2: What is LAN and WAN?

Me: Told.

Then they started to ask qns from God knows what topics. I had no idea about it and simply said that.

I2: Do you have a laptop{don't know why he asked it) ?

I1: Suppose you have to learn some new computer languages. Will you be ready to learn?

Me: Sir, I looking coding. Hence I would love to.

I1 : looked at I2 and asked him whether he wanted to ask more. He said no.

I1: Okay Deblina. Thank you.

Me: Thank you sir.

Results came after 2 days and I was not selected. Hope you guys learn something from my experience. All the best!
