I m Ashish Desai from Kolhapur. I want to share my experience of TCS campus interviews .It was dated on 15th of Jan 2010. Criteria was 60% aggregate.
1. Online Aptitude test
2. Minimum 3 rounds of interviews
Aptitude Test ( online) "
It was a COMPLETE BOUNCER.
NO VERBAL AT ALL.
NO SECTIONS AT ALL.
NO SECTIONAL TIME LIMITS.
It was 80 min test with 35 questions and NEGATIVE marking . So b careful while guessing the answers. One thing I observed in these 35 questions that questions were so easy BUT the way they were asked was really tricky. Even though these questions were so lengthy generally lots of information given in question was unnecessary. So DON'T GET BOTHERED ABOUT LENGTH OF QUESTION . THEY ARE EASY.
Topics in aptitude "
Age - really simple but they present it in a very difficult language. Again lots of unnecessary stuff.
Series " e.g. 1, 4, 9, -- , 25 . But they don't ask it directly. Again they build some story about it and present this problem in words.
Conversions (miles to yards etc etc.)
Some basic geometrical principles - lines , squares etc. Make sure you are aware of their basic properties.
I had attempted 20-22 out of 35 (including 2-3 guesses )and I cracked the aptitude.
There were 3 rounds of interviews. Technical , MR and HR interviews. But I had two technical interviews and one HR interview.
The technical interviewer was very young and very polite. He greeted me with smile when I entered for interview.
Me: gud afternoon sir.
He- Sit down ashish (while reading my resume which they had collected before interviews )
Tell me about yourself ( he asked it to make me comfortable)
I- told .
He- I can see from your resume that you got great marks in 10th but in 12th marks are very poor. Again in engg they are good. What happened in 12th ?
Me: Sir I could not concentrate over my studies therefore ..
He- ok ok , tell me about the symbian os ?
Me: ( it was my seminar. Therefore I was expecting the question. ) told.
He "ok tell me basically what is os ?
He- can we operate a device having no operating system ?
Me: yes sir. We can . ( given a example of calculator ).
He- how ?
Me: I guess, we can program the chip .
He- but the operating system itself is one program. Then what is the diff. between program of device and program of operating system?
Me: ( I was confused totally. that time I realized interviews are very different from our regular oral. ) sorry sir , don't know.
He - ok let it go(n he smiled) tell me about pure virtual functions in c++
He- what is copy constructer?
He- what are friend functions?
He "(reading my resume again ) your project is on Data mining? Explain it.
He- tell me about ACID properties.
Me: told ( but he was not convinced )
He-no its totally wrong. Tell me what is transaction first.
Me: told (I explained but he was not ready to agree on what I was telling. Literally for next 10 min he and I were stuck on "WHAT IS TRANSACTION IN DB¯)
He " ok now tell me what is normalized forms in DB?
Me: don't know sir.
He- tell me about different Data mining tools u have used.
Me: Sorry sir, I don't know about them.
He " what are diff. normalization forms in DB
I -Don't know sir. ( Hatrick of saying 'no' )
He " tell me about hashing
He- write a c program with simple hash function
Me: ( started writing )
He " what hash function you are using ?
Me: mod 10..
He " (asked me to stop writing program ) ok ok . you can go now.
Me: Thank you sir.
After that I faced 2nd T.I. in which only one question was asked " what is website hacking ?¯ It was Beamer for me. I said " don't know sir.¯(I was used to say 'don't know ')
Then it came HR interview. It was in group. 6 students and 3 HR people. Then they made 2 groups .
HR said " " suppose we people are clients. We have one project. Now one group is TCS and another is INFOSYS. You have to convince us how your company is capable to carry out this project successfully. "
I was in INFOSYS group . it's a debate. And our group put forward some good points. I told HR people about quality of product , trust, our R&D, Good Customer Relationships etc etc. My group member and my friend Mayur also told some good points. Other group was weak in this discussion and as a result HR said "infy has convinced me in better manner¯. (This all was happening at TCS interview. TCS HR was saying ' Infosys has better convinced us ')
Then he told about 2 year bond etc etc. and finally asked "do you have any question?¯ Nobody asked anything.
Interviews were finally over. I was happy because even though T.I. was difficult I have performed well in HR interview. After some time results are announced and I was very happy hearing my name in that list.
