Discussion Forum : Cubes and Dice - Section 1 (Q.No. 14)
Directions to Solve

The sheet of paper shown in the figure (X) given on the left hand side, in each problem, is folded to form a box. Choose from amongst the alternatives (1), (2), (3) and (4), the boxes that are similar to the box that will be formed.

14.

Choose the box that is similar to the box formed from the given sheet of paper (X).

1 and 2 only
1, 2 and 4 only
1 and 4 only
1, 2 and 3 only
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The fig. (X) is similar to the Form V. So, when the sheet shown in fig. (X) is folded to form a cube then the shaded face lies opposite to one of the blank faces, the face bearing a circle lies opposite to another blank face and the face bearing a shaded square lies opposite to the third blank face. Thus, each one of the cubes shown in figures (1), (2) and (4) can be formed. Also, though the cube shown in fig. (3) has faces that can appear adjacent to each other but the cube formed by folding the sheet in fig. (X) cannot be rotated to form fig. (3). Hence, the cube in fig.(3) cannot be formed.

No, it cannot be Option 1.

Anyone please explain the answer clearly?

In the answer it says figure (x) cannot be rotated but the question did not say (no rotation) and according to your answer if the rotation is not possible then the fig2 is not possible. As your answer was (b) 1, 2 and 4, it is possible only if fig (x) is rotated, and you said no rotation so the answer will be only (c) 1 and 4.

Anyone, please explain the answer clearly to understand.

If rotation is not possible then Fig 2 is not possible and fig3 does not form, because there should be a shaded square instead of a blank face.

Am I right?

@All.

If you try folding the net upwards and then downwards you get (2) also (3).

If circle has to appear at top and shaded region on right side, then the surface facing front should be the one bearing the smaller box, not empty. Hence figure 3 is incorrect.

The question itself is problematic here. Contrary to the given answer, the only possible option is (3). After folding (X), the face bearing the circle, shaded face and the face bearing the shaded square all lie on adjacent faces.

When we are facing the circle, the shaded face comes after the face bearing the shaded square if we move in a clockwise direction. This is possible only with option (3). Please correct this mistake.
