Reverse transcriptase (RT) is an enzyme used to generate complementary DNA (cDNA) from an RNA template, a process termed reverse transcription.

Reverse transcriptase is also known RNA dependent /directed DNA polymerase.

This mechanism of generating a complementary DNA using RNA as a template by the action of RNA polymerase is used by viruses such a HIV.
