Unlike plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, they do not use water as their reducing agent, so do not produce oxygen. Instead, they use hydrogen sulfide, which is oxidised to produce granules of elemental sulfur. This, in turn, may be oxidised to form sulfuric acid.
