The gram +ve bacteria are inhibited by the action of crystal violet whereas the gram-negative is not due to their cell wall characteristics these are not susceptible to the crystal violet.

Ex. The mac Conkey agar media contains the crystal violet, hence it is specially used for the growth of gram-negative bacteria.
