Direct Current Straight Polarity = Electrode is -ive and work is +ive.
Direct Current Reverse Polarity = Electrode is +ive and Work is -ive.

Electrode-positive (reversed polarity) results in deeper penetration. Electrode-negative (straight polarity) results in faster melt-off of the electrode and, therefore, faster deposition rate.

I was on the understanding it is reversed when the positive is connected to the work. As for the welding. And the hand piece the earth.
