A riser, also known as a feeder it is a reservoir built into a metal casting mould to prevent cavities due to shrinkage. Most metals are less dense as a liquid than as a solid so castings shrink upon cooling, which can leave a void at the last point to solidify.

There are two types of shrinkage. One is liquid shrinkage other solid linkage. For compensate liquid shrinkage resit is provided, for solid shrinkage +allowance is provided.

Molten metal is delivered through raiser only to the cavity for compensate any shrinkage.

As I feel, it acts both as a reservoir and also compensates for the shrinkage.
