Coal gas is made in the absence of oxygen, not at the ambient conditions, is it right or not!

Coal gas is obtained from organic substance which are drawn from earth by carbonizing process. We can not made it in open atmosphere because it can react air and it made blast. That's why we are making it in a closed pressure vessel.
