Sating that efficiency of diesel cycle is less than Otto cycle is wrong. We all that that diesel engines run more for the same amount of fuel.

Hence there is no way that efficiency of diesel cycle is less than that of Otto cycle.

The efficiency of diesel cycle increase with decrease cutt of ratio.
Because of -
η α 1/ cutt of ratio.
η α compression ratio.

Due to decrease in cut off ratio, diesel cycle will tends to change to Otto cycle. And efficiency of Otto cycle is greater than diesel cycle.

When cuttof ratio decreases then volume before combustion increases then automatically efficiency of diesel cycle increased.

Explain clearly how decrease in cut-off ratio increases the efficiency of diesel cycle?

Saurabh said:   1 decade ago
Cut off ratio is the ratio of volume after combustion to the volume before combustion.

Cut off is depend on it and it will be maximum for zero cut off. Simple!

Efficiency =(1-1/r^gma-1){x^gma -1}/{r(x-1)}.

Here X is cut off ratio.

Cutoff=1 deisel cycle=otto and at cutoff=0 diesel cycle efficiency max.
