It is a thermodynamic process.

Because in the cycle the system has to return to the initial state. Consider that heat is added at constant volume now to expand the same gas volume gas to increase so the final state is not reached hence it is not cycled. Therefore, it is just a series of the process most acceptable another process, not a cycle. It is a thermodynamic process.

Heating and expanding of gas is a thermodynamic cycle because thermodynamics process is simply the succession of changes of state while a system can be said to have undergone a thermodynamic cycle if it goes through series of processes. Heating a gas is a process and expansion of gas is another process. So, therefore it is a thermodynamic cycle.

When the gas kept in a vessel is heated, the gas rises up in the container to expand, and when it stops heating, the gas returns to its old state, again when heating, Then the gas rises again to expand, comes back to its state after stopping heating. Thus it proves that this is a thermal cycle, not a thermodynamics process.

Thermodynamics System is a definite macroscopic region or Space in the universe in which one or more thermodynamic processes take place.

Thermodynamics System are generally 3 types,
1. Open System.
2. Close System.
3. Isolated System.

Thermodynamic cycle consists of a linked sequence of thermodynamic processes that involve transfer of heat and work into and out of the system, so heating and expanding of a gas is thermodynamic cycle.

But when we add heat in gas, it get expanded i.e. pressure and volume changes from state 1 to state 2 hence heating and expanding of gas is the thermodynamic process.

Thermodynamic cycle is consist of linked thermodynamic process that convert heat into work.

So heating and expanding is thermodynamic process but not a cycle.

I think heating and expanding is thermodynamic cycle because after expanding the state will be same as that before heating i.e. it completes a cycle.

Thermodynamics process tells about store the thermal energy and transfer to mechanical energy. Not tells about heating and expanding of a gas. !

Heating and expanding of a gas is called a "thermodynamic process" not a system.
