Hammer blow is very harmful factor in balancing. In the partial balancing the reciprocating masses (Bb) are not equal to cmr where c is fraction of reciprocating mass to be balance so the balance masses attached on the wheels.

Swaying couple are another factor in the balancing. Initially in the locomotive the two cylinder was arrange on both sides (left or right) due to which swaying couple comes out. Due to the same tractive force was present there and we also know that tractive (pulling action).

Since the cracks of different cylinders are some distance apart, they constitute a couple. This couple is transmitted thru the crankshaft to wheels (front or rear depending upon the location of the engine in the vehicle), and it tends to lift the wheels.

Swaying couple - In this leading wheels Sway from side to side, all by unbalanced forces along the line of stroke and are separated by a distance 'L' and thus constitute a couple. This is max, when Theta= 45 or 225 degrees.

Can any one explain swaying couple in detail?
