Critical neutral axis is the neutral axis at a balanced state, usually found through similar triangles using the modular ratio.

Actual neutral axis is found by assuming tensile and compressive moments are equal.

If actual < critical, the beam is under-reinforced.

If actual > critical, the beam is over-reinforced.
