Euler's formula is used for long column only and Rankine's formula is used for both column wheater they are short or long.

What is the relation of Euler's formula with the strength of materials?

@Hari Hara Krishna.

Critical stress is the ratio of critical load and area. Critical load is the load at which the buckling of the column is initiated.

The assumption of Euler's theory.

1. The column is initially straight.

2. The cross section of the column is uniform.

3. The length of the column is large while comparing to its lateral dimension.

4. Shortening of a column is neglected.

5. The material of column is homogeneous and isotropic and obeys Hooks law.

It is called a section modulus.

For long column, the value of buckling load is Crushing load.
