Since tangential stress = PD/2t and longitudinal stress = PD/4t.
Longitudinal stress is half of tangential stress.
Longitudinal stress is half of tangential stress.

The formula wrote for thin cylinders i.e. pd/2t for maximum hoop stress and minimum stress is pd/4t not of thick cylinder.

I think D/t factor is responsible for it greater than internal pressure.

What I think is that in thick cylinder the internal pressure is balanced by both radial stress and hoop stress (tangential stress). So its obvious that the max hoop stress is always less then the internal pressure of the cylinder.

Tangential stress will be pD/2t and given question relate with pressure, D/t is more value, therefore, tangential stress more than the pressure.
