The loading condition in case of a leaf spring can said to be a transverse loading, and in this case the top layer will be under tension and bottom layer will be under compression.

If the beam is simply supported then maximum compressive stress will be at top layer and if it is cantilever beam then maximum compressive stress will act at the bottom layer.

Loaded means loaded downwards. In that case upper fibers will be compressed while lower will be expanded. Hence maximum compressive stress will be developed in top layer.

Top layer will be subjected to max compressive stress and bottom layer will be subjected to max tensile stress. Refer pg :- 293, Strength of materials by R.K.Bansal.

If it is cantilever beam the answer would be bottom later.
If it is SSB then the top layer.
Transfer load means acting perpendicular to the beam axis.
If it is SSB then the top layer.
Transfer load means acting perpendicular to the beam axis.

There is no clarity in question, here it should mention which type of beam is loaded.
For cantilever beam "bottom layer".
For ss beam "top layer".
For cantilever beam "bottom layer".
For ss beam "top layer".

If beam is cantilever then max. compressive stress will be in the bottom fibre but in case SSB max. compressive stress will be in the top fibre.

Maximum compressive stress in developed at the top layer. And maximum tensile stress is developed at bottom fibre due to elongation of fibre.

If the beam is loaded in zagging then top layer is in compression and bottom layer is in tension and if it is in hogging then vica versa.

According to me, question is insufficient because the loading condition is not given that is it a simply supported of cantilever.
