What if σ2 is negative that will accomplish A option is correct?

Please explain me.

A is correct if minor principal stress(σ2) is -ve.
For example solve;

σ-X=40MPa,
σ-Y= 60MPa,
The shear stress (xy)=50.

Then you will get A as correct.
