Crushing stress (bearing stress) is a special type of localized compressive stress which occurs at the surface of contact of two members that are relatively at rest. It is taken into account in the design of riveted joints, cotter joints, knuckle joints.

It should be a tensile stress - if you consider that a force is acting inwards at the intersecting face (which is what it means to be a compressive force) then each member is pushing inwards at that point, meaning that the members are under a tensile load - right?
