Material Poisson's ratio.

Rubber 0.4999

Gold 0.42 - 0.44

Saturated clay 0.40-0.49

Magnesium 0.35

Titanium 0.34

Copper 0.33

Aluminium-alloy 0.32

Clay 0.30-0.45

Stainless steel 0.30-0.31

Steel 0.27-0.30

Cast iron 0.21-0.26

Sand 0.20-0.45

Concrete 0.20

Glass 0.18-0.3

Foam 0.10-0.40

Cork ~ 0.00

I think cast iron has less Poisson ratio than steel. We know that Poisson ratio =lateral strain/linear strain. Due to this castiron has more carbon percent than steel. So, the lateral strain will be less compare to steel.

Option A is the correct answer.
Clay 0.30-0.45,
Stainless steel 0.30-0.31,
Steel 0.27-0.30,
Cast iron 0.21-0.26.

Poission's ratio of:-

Cast iron:-0.23 to 0.27.
Steel :-0.25 to 0.33.
"This is correct answer".

C.I -> 0.23-0.27.
MILD STEEL -> 0.25-0.33.
AL -> 0.34.
CORK -> 0.34.
CONCRET -> 0.15.
POLYMER -VE.

Poisson's ratio of CI is 0.23 to 0.27 (refer chapter 6-Elastic constants page no.93 Khurmi Gupta).

Steel:0.25 to 0.33 and CI:0.23 to 0.27 [Ref.Mechanical Engineering for Competitions R.K. Jain].

In R.s.Khurmi. 0.23-0.27.
In R k.Jain. 0.25-0.33.

Which is correct option? Please tell me.

In (R S Khurmi) Book, it's,

For Steel : 0.22 to 0.25.

And for CI : 0.25 to 0.33.

Cast iron is brittle than steel so its poisons ratio will be less than steel.
