The component v1 cos-alpha is equal to absolute velocity along the component that is 537.

What is the value of alpha here?

Tangential component is given so for absolute it is cos component.

Work done = [454(2 * 537 - 454)]/1000 = 282.

For 50% reaction turbine;
Workdone = Vb (2V1cos α-vb)/(1000).
Substitute it 454/1000(2 * 537 - 454) = 282.
Workdone = Vb (2V1cos α-vb)/(1000).
Substitute it 454/1000(2 * 537 - 454) = 282.

I think this can be obtained from velocity triangle method.

50% reaction turbine there is one formula,
Work done = Vb (2V1cos alpha-vb)/(1000).
Substitute and we can get it 454/1000(2*537-434) = 282.
Work done = Vb (2V1cos alpha-vb)/(1000).
Substitute and we can get it 454/1000(2*537-434) = 282.
