Piston moves up and down so by the piston crank moves in rotary motion.

Only power transmission from crank to piston.

But, the rod only converts the reciprocating motion of the piston into the rotating motion of crank, Not the rotatory motion of the piston.

If there is not a connecting rod between piston and crank, how they are connected with each other and how the motion will transfer. The only link between piston and crank is connecting rod so connecting rod converts reciprocating motion of piston into rotary motion of crank.

Piston is the reciprocating part and crank is rotary part so only link between them is connecting road. So we can say connecting rod converts the reciprocating motion into rotary motion.

Rod only transmit motion from piston to crank. Crank fulfill this purpose.
