Due to the hardness of silicon carbide, electrical conductivity and stability at high temperatures, it is used in making regimental grinding wheel and bricks used in high heat.
The electrical conductivity of silicon carbide increases at high temperatures, which is the best driver at high temperatures. So silicon carbide abrasive is chiefly used for grinding cemented carbide, ceramic and cast iron.

Silicon carbide is recommended for grinding materials of low tensile strength like cast iron, brass, bronze, cemented carbide.
Aluminium oxide is recommended for grinding materials of high tensile strength like iron, annealed malleable iron, carbon steel and high speed steel.

It is used generally for grinding soft material but can be used for harder material like cemented carbide.
