Crater wear occurs due to temperature mainly. And high carbon tool steel withstands the least temperature 250°C. 250°C is too low for diffusion. HSS will withstand 600°C it is also low for diffusion. WC (Tungsten Carbide) tool contains cobalt as a binder which can diffuse as the temperature is 800°C to 900°C. Ceramics are carbide or oxides of metal it will not diffuse.

At high temperature, WC disintegrates to W + C.
The Carbon atom diffuses to workpiece thereby creating a hole/crater.

The answer given for this question is wrong. Crater wear occurs on rack surface predominantly at high speed and at high speeds temperature is also high which (carbon steel tools) can't withstand.

A is the right answer because Crater wear occurs due to more high temperature, and carbon tool steel with Stan at least temperature 290 degrees centigrade.

Because there is good chemical affinity b/w carbon in tungsten carbide and steel tool. So diffusion occurs and due to this wear.

But tungsten is good heat dissipation, so diffusion will less and not a predominant in tungsten carbide tool. I think its answer may carbon steel tool.
