The cage/retainer positions the rolling elements evenly around the rings and makes sure that load is equally distributed.

In needle bearing, the cage is only absent because needle roller are placed continually over the periphery.

The main purpose of the case is to avoid clustering and maintain relative motion.

When ball bearing do not have a cage, then internal balls are struck together. Noise and friction occurs.
