Here the castle nut has a hexagonal shape, on the top of the nut it has a material projection and that material is cut into three slots in first in transversal and remaining two is diagonal and those three slots are opposite to the for the phase of hexagonal net so.
The three slots are going to convert into 6 slots and this nut is moustly used in automobiles.

There is no need of calculations and and no need of referring data book. Only by seeing the castle nut we can say it's slots. A castle nut of any diameter can have only 6 slots.

There is no required to calculate these nuts. Only need to refer the Standard table & check which value will be correct to set in the assembly.

According to me, Size of castle nut will not make any difference in number of holes. Every Hexagonal Castle nut must have only 6 holes.

A slotted nut that allows insertion of a cotter pin to prevent rotation. Usually manufactured from metal with various sizes.

Ya for such type of calculation we should use Indian standard specification, which give us idea about such question.

In my view there is a 8 is right answer because in 1inch 8slot cut and 1inch = 25 mm then the answer is 8.

Castle nut have 6 sides/hexagonal. One slot on each corner. Diameter or thickness does not matter.
