A plate with an elliptical hole in the centre, with semi-major axis (a) perpendicular to the direction of loading and semi-minor axis (b) along the direction of loading, is subjected to a pull P. Given answer is correct. In general with circular hole max stress =3 times normal stress. For circular hole a=b. By substitute in option B we getting the right answer. So for the elliptical, answer given is correct.

The answer is D. In general if the hole is circular the max stress induced at the edge thrice its stress.
