Diesel engines make heterogeneous mixture with air that's why if fuel-air ratio is rich or stoichiometric then complete fuel will not enough oxygen for combustion hence poor thermal efficiency.
Therefore, Diesel engines are always run at leaner mixture also called weak mixture.
If mixture is more leaner then efficiency will again decreases. It is maximum at the little leaner mixture.

The thermal efficiency of diesel engines on weak mixtures is higher. Compression-ignition engines are more fuel efficient (upto 30%) than their gasoline counterparts. Diesel has more long chain hydrocarbons, which is 15 percent more energy dense than gasoline.

The extremely weak air - fuel mixtures lead to lower combustion temperatures. While lean-burn gas engines offer higher theoretical thermal efficiencies, transient response and performance may be compromised in certain situations.

Weak mixture results to complete combustion of fuel because each fuel particle carrying sufficient oxygen to burn it completely.
So, the complete combustion results of higher thermal efficiency.
So, the complete combustion results of higher thermal efficiency.

So according to above discussion, we can say, weak mixture gives less amount fuel. High pressure required to complete the combustion, high temperature induced. Thermal efficiency is increased.

Weak mixture has low combustibility and therefore requires a very high combustion temperature for combustion to be possible and if compression ratio increases efficiency increases.

Weak (lean) mixture means low fuel-air ratio, since the fuel is completly burned by oxygen. So the thermal efficincy is max but not work out put (efectivness is not good).

Lean mixture means low HC, leads to better fuel economy. So in a way it will have a better thermal efficiency but lower work output.

I think efficiency should be decreased because of weak mixer required input is high so efficiency decreased,
Effi. = output/input.
Effi. = output/input.
