Consider the case of any IC engine say petrol engine and we know it's efficiency:-
η = 1 - 1/r^(γ-1).
And from here we can clearly see if 'r' increases then the value of term after negative sign will decrease and hence efficiency will increase, and similarly can be analysed for other engines.

Thermal efficiency is which the IC engine converts its heat to mechanical power through shaft i.e. BP. It is about 26 to 30%.
