Since, volumetric efficiency is defined as actual charge intake to a stroke volume.
If inlet valve will close before reaching BDC the amount of charge intake will be less and hence lesser charge will be accumulated inside the cylinder for combustion. Therefore reduces the volumetric efficiency of the engine.
