Cetane number is an indication of probability of knocking in a diesel engine and higher the cetane number, lesser is the chance of knocking in the diesel engine. Knocking in a diesel engine occurs mainly due to the high ignition delay period.

High ignition delay deteriorates the ignition quality and results in detonation in the engine. Thus, ignition quality of a diesel engine is expressed by the cetane number of the fuel used in the engine.
