Answer is perfect.

In petrol engine, quality of fuel is kept constant and quantity of fuel is varied according to load.

And in diesel engine quantity is kept constant and quality of fuel varied according to load.

As the load decreases the mixture of air and fuel by qualitative or A/f ratio tends to go for the leaner region.

And leaner mixture burns for a longer time and quicker as temp required is low and due to high compression ratio the temp is reached readily so has less ignition delay.

And thus, the lower cut-off ratio for same compression ratio. So efficiency increases.

In short.

PETROL - QUALITY.
DIESEL - QUANTITY.
