Depends upon the type of engine whether SI or CI engine.

What is detonation?

@Manoja.
The loud pulsating noise from the engine cylinder of an ic engine is known as detonation (caused due to the propagation of a high-pressure wave created by the auto-ignition of the end portion of the unburnt fuel) it is sufficient to break the position.
So it is harmful to the engine.
