Scavenging efficiency is retained volume/charge volume = retained volume/ (retained + residual) volume.
Diesel engine possess piston head crowning and its inner pressure is always much higher after expansion stroke than Patm.
So when exhaust stroke starts the product of combustion is easily washed due to high positive pressure gradient. So high scavenging.
