The exhaust gas of diesel engine is cooler because of thermal efficiency.

It is known that diesel engine has high efficiency compared to petrol engine.

The more efficient engine has cooler exhaust gas temperature.

The more efficiency means more the combustion heat gets converted into the work, which removes heat from the exhaust gas. And it makes the exhaust gas cooler.
