If the depth of water in an open channel is less than the critical depth, the flow is called torrential.

As of my knowledge, The flow is very slow,

Fr=1. Critical flow
Fr>1. Supercritical flow (rapid flow)
Fr<1. Subcritical flow (slow flow/Tranquil Flow)
Fr> 1.

The depth of water in a channel corresponding to the minimum specific energy is known as critical depth.

What is the significance of critical depth?

The critical depth is the depth at which Froude number =1,
F=v/√(gy) if depth is more than this it is subcritical flow or else supercritical flow.

When Froude no is less than 1 then the flow is said to be sub critical or Tranquil flow (both are same).

If the depth of water in an open channel is greater than the critical depth, the flow is also called subcritical flow (slow flow).

Streaming flow or tranquil flow is the flow when depth of flow in an open channel is greater than the critical depth.
